Rajkummar Rao is one of the most versatile actor that Bollywood has to offer these days. He had to face many struggles and hardship to make it this big in the industry which is riddled with nepotism and fails to recognize true talent. He is an outsider that not only carved a name for himself but also went on to win National Film Award for Best Actor with his role in movie Shahid.
In his initial days right after graduating from Film and Television Institute of India, Pune, he spent days trying to get a role by spending all his time auditioning and trying to meet casting directors. He was prepared for the hard work and wanted to make it as big as Shahrukh Khan in the industry and proceeded to do so with his never-ending zeal. Now, he is an actor that is renowned for his content driven film.
Even the small roles he played in movies like Talaash, Shaitaan, Ragini MMS, etc. were well-received by the critics. The brief roles he played were small but alluring and his acting skills shone despite less screen time. He is dedicated to his craft and his hard work is quite apparent in his acting skills which are raw, emotive and powerful. He is able to capture our attention with these movie scenes which are mesmerizing, to say the least.

Rajkummar Rao has two roles in this movie, one of a shy, scared and timid Pritam Vidrohi who is a saree salesman who undergoes complete transformation to become rude, arrogant and disrespectful street thug. Both of them are quite funny to watch and are a complete entertainer, he even won the Filmfare award for Best supporting actor for this role.
Here Rajkummar Rao plays the role of Shamshad Alam who is also a thug and cons money from Faizal. Even though his role is short and not as significant as that of other actors, the scene where he is chasing Definite is quite elaborate and is said to be shot spontaneously with actors acting out as they wanted to. He brings out his authentic acting skills and plays his part effortlessly.

He is nothing but adaptable and here also we see him adapting to the role of a small town guy belonging from a middle-class family who falls in love with a girl who leaves him to pursue her dreams which consequently makes him want to take revenge. Rajkummar Rao acts out as a jilted lover who takes up the role of serious IAS officer in the second half of the movie quite effortlessly, he tortures and tries to destroy her career throughout the other half.
Here we see him in the role of the call center worker in Mumbai who gets trapped in an apartment without any food, electricity or water. Rao went complete transformation and lost a lot of weight for this movie. He even throws a whole television set and shouts out for watchman who doesn’t even hear him. It sets out to show his desperation and paranoia arising from complete isolation.

This movie shows the journey of a Muslim who becomes a lawyer and fights cases for the Muslims who were wrongfully put in the jail because of Prevention of Terrorism Act(POTA). His role as a man of strong will and character who was dealt with an extraordinary life full of hardships was portrayed terrifically by Rajkummar Rao. We can feel the intensity of desperation portrayed in the scene where black ink is rubbed on his face.
His role as Vijay who is the fiance of Rani even though short and brief is able to showcase the snootiness of his character to perfection. The way he dusts off the mehendi dust from the table right after refusing to marry Rani due to his expensive tastes. He acts in such way and manner that makes us consider him a degenerate and absolutely feel elated when Rani rejects his proposal the second time.
There is this powerful scene performed by Rajkummar Rao in which he is shown in Tihar jail and his prison mate Aftab asks him about the unbearable torture that he goes through to this he replies that they can torture him as much as they want but they can never break him and never kill their war. This scene is intense as Rajkummar plays the dark character of Omar to perfection and is able to portray the single-mindedness of this terrorist.
