We all have one awkward memory with a finger bowl when we were kids. We all had thought it to be an after-dinner refreshment which the restaurant bestow us as a complimentary drink.
Thank God, our parents were with us, otherwise, we would have swill down happily, and regret it later because we know how our siblings are.
The finger bowl is a half-filled bowl with lukewarm water and some slice of lemon or some flower petals that are arranged in a doily. The fingertips are dipped in the bowl after completion of the dinner and then dried with a paper or cloth napkin.
How to Use?
If we talk about dining etiquette, there is a way to use finger bowl - you have to dip not more than the tip of the finger in the finger bowl without crushing the lemon slice/flower petals.
What most people do is, they squeeze or rub the lemon with their fingers into the finger bowl and that's not how it is executed.
